Harmonise: an autumnal yoga retreat

workshop images (5).png

Nowadays, terms like “Self-care”, “Mindfulness” and “Hygge” have become commonplace in our modern culture as people yearn for simpler times. This nostalgia is a wonderful catalyst for positive change as it draws our focus away from glamorising “busyness” (and potentially burnout) to a presence that will cultivate healthy longevity. However, how do we embody this? Furthermore, how do we move between seasons? So much emphasis is placed on the height of these phases: from basking in the warmth of the summer sun or stiffening against the harshness of the winter freeze. How would it feel to prepare for the season ahead during the transitional period and celebrate it’s energetic shift? Hence, preventing physical or mental illness associated with the change?

Our autumnal retreat will be a unique offering to prepare ourselves for the challenges and hibernation of the darker months. A blessed time for rest, recuperation and inner knowing. Drawing on elements of TCM, Ayurvedic Practices and the healing power of nature, we will spend time nourishing our bodies, supporting our immune systems and learning seasonal self care techniques. You will be encouraged to slow down and create some much needed space away from the demands of daily life.

what to expect

With arrival from 4pm on Friday, our weekend will commence with an opening ceremony before a light dinner.

Each morning will start a self serve breakfast and coffee, followed by our yoga workshops.

On Saturday afternoon, Lena will lead a nature meander within the spectacular 60 acres of ground surrounding The Comb. With a qualification in foraging, there may be some tasty late autumn treasures awaiting to be picked! There will be discussion seasonal eating and TCM.

On Sunday, we will delve deeper by exploring methods of self-care for autumn and winter by: demonstrating the ancient art and science of cupping; self massage methods; and Aromatherapy.

Each evening will end with a blissful restorative practice to send you into deep and rejuvenating sleep.

The retreat is set in the heart of the Northumberland Dark Sky Park making our location exemplary for star gazing. Weather dependent, we intend to take advantage of this one evening in front of an outdoor open fire. Under the canopy of the cosmos, there will also be the option of an evening meditation or a gentle Qi Gong practice.

The weekend will close at 2pm on Sunday.

U R Enough at Christmas

u r ENOUGH.jpg

Back by popular demand, our U R ENOUGH at Christmas. This time, in the beautiful space at Beetroot Sauvage.

Christmas- cinnamon cookies baking in the oven, fairy lights twinkling, carol singing. Family obligations, extra housework, crazy shopping and meeting deadlines -the festive season can be a magical yet fraught time.

How often does our inner critic tell us that we are not doing enough at Christmas; not spending enough; not socialising enough; not being enough for our families? These self-mutilating, habitual thoughts force us to plough on through in a determined struggle to complete endless to-do lists. BUT, is the cost worth it? We ignore our bodies plea’s for rest in a desperate attempt to prevent feelings of inadequacy emerging.

In Chinese Medicine theory, the winter is the time for dormancy, an opportunity to refuel for the brighter months. Overlooking these natural feelings leads to colds, flu, stress.

Hannah and Lena return to nourish, to care, to hold space and to remind you not to sacrifice your own essential needs for others. This Yuletide season, give your loved ones and yourself the most precious gift of all - presence over presents.

Join us for our Christmas special. Four hours to escape the festive madness filled with yoga, massage and mince pies.

Tickets: £50

Zhi- A Yin Yoga & Cupping Workshop

workshop images (15).png

"Zhi" defn: The shen/spirit related to the Kidney system. It is the minister of will, effort and perseverance.

Blending Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with yoga has become commonplace and is growing in popularity. Combining these 2 systems is especially relatable in the season of winter as TCM provides a beautiful model to explain the importance of slowing down and conserving Jing (life essence). However to fully support the Kidneys (Zang organ system related to winter), it is not enough simply to do less. Excessive sedantary activities can lead to stagnation of Qi, creating a frustrated Liver for the coming of spring. Afterall, there is no Yin without Yang - an expert balance of both is required for optimal health.

Join Hannah and Lena for a relaxing and rejuvenating evening of Yin Yoga, cupping and self massage.

A range of complimentary delicious homemade refreshments (including mince pies and mulled wine) will be offered at the end of class.

Cost: £25
Date and Time: Friday 13th December, 7.00 - 9.00 pm
Location: Mulberry House, Edinburgh

Hannah is a Yin and Hatha yoga teacher specialising in Mental Health.
Lena is a Forrest and Hatha yoga teacher who has over 15 years clinical experience as a TCM acupuncturist.
Together they are DAO Yoga. Their teaching is not centred around the visually aesthetic, gymnastic- style yoga postures, but on the nurturing and deeper aspects of yoga. Suitable for all levels, this yogi pair will hold space for you as they guide you through the subtle artistry of this very special ancient sacred practice.

Anchor Your Shen

workshop images (12).png

Lena and Hannah invite you to join them for the 3rd workshop in the Elemental Healing Series.

Last summer was the most luscious and balmiest that we had experienced in years. Trees were dripping in fruity treasures of cherries, apples, pears and plums. Golden raspberry canes and loganberry bushes hung heavy with their ruby jewels. People ambled along leisurely without any rush, lingering to greet friends in the street. Indeed, our bodies naturally rejoice in the height of this season.

However as with all good things, imbalances can occur. Summer corresponds to the Heart organ system in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and is housed in the chest with it’s neighbour, the Lungs. The Heart also houses the “Shen” or our divine spirit. Not only is this is our consciousness that gives us joy, excitement, and the ability to find fun in life; it also gives us our connection to compassion and spiritual growth. However, the Heart is particularly sensitive to Heat and disharmonies may lead to mania, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, night sweats and feeling easily bothered by others.

Our workshop is designed to soothe the Heart by grounding the spirit with mediation, clearing excess Heat/Fire with a sweaty Vinyasa Flow, before cooling down with a blissful Yin sequence to support chest Qi.

Refreshments and mini head massage included: £25

Honour Your Inner Darkness (A Halloween Special)

photo-1502919280275-1bed9aca68ab.jpg

Harmony is to balance seemingly opposing forces- the shining Yang with it's cooler friend, Yin. Nowadays, yoga classes commonly focus on it's uplifting and jubilant quality or it's restful and restorative nature. To be truly whole and mindful, we must acknowledge our shadowier elements. The rage, the misery, the anguish, the despair. To deny ourselves these painful sensations creates the loss of context and perspective. It is these powerful emotions that are necessary for growth and transformation.

This Halloween season, Hannah and Lena will fiercely hold space to safely explore inner darkness- our ghosts that haunt us all.
Lena's Forrest Yoga sequence delves into the insidious feelings of guilt and shame that reside somatically in our cell tissue. As a group, we will flow through the usually solitary experience of suffering and feel it together with targeted breath and movement.

This supportive process leads into Hannah's Yin practice. Residual feelings lingering from the earlier segment and the emotional discomfort stored in the fascia will be given our full attention as Hannah carefully guides us to a lighter state of being. Happiness can then be  felt freely at its brightest and unhindered, unencumbered by shadow.

Our intelligently woven workshop balances strong breath, yoga asana with a genuine, authentic honesty that will move you physically and emotionally.

Hot herbal teas and cake included in the price

INSIGHT: Expect Nothing, Receive Everything

31131222_1625817787471557_1267554001243830618_n.jpg

How would it feel to let go of: the desire to execute the "perfect" downward facing dog; or the desperate wish to nail a backbend; or even the expectation to touch your toes? Social media representations of yoga poses is rife and is sadly steering our sacred practice into a gymnastic, goal-orientated entity. Numbing the wise messages spoken to us by our unique body and conforming to assumptions can dampen our individual creativity.

Hannah and Lena return, for a third time this year, to lead you through a childlike exploration of your yoga experience. By ridding ourselves of aspirations on the mat, it allow us to switch into a feeling mode- one that inspires curiosity and provides us with a richer understanding of ourselves.

Our workshop will be an interactive sequence where both the teacher and participants mutually uptake the beauty of a selection of poses. Giving each asana our full attention will naturally guide us onto the next one. Our focus will be centred on feeling deeply, expecting nothing, experiencing pleasure; surrendering to the faith in bodies and gaining INSIGHT into the glorious sensations of our own remarkable and very personal yoga practice.

Suitable for all levels including beginners. (A mix of Forrest Yoga, Yin and restorative poses.)

Complimentary freshments will be served (vegan, non-vegan and gluten free)

TONIFY: Year Of The Down Dog

22730140_1458086157578055_8346248780741102191_n.jpg

A good spring clean may seem cliché but it's well known for it's benefits. Not only do we regard our environment with a fresher perspective but it creates space for inviting in positivity for the year ahead. The same is true for our bodies. Shedding the remnants of the winter season and transitioning into the rebirth of spring can be a challenge in the unpredictable Scottish climate.

We have devised a yoga workshop to dynamically refresh you for the brighter seasons. With a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles and Forrest Yoga, Lena will take you through a sequence that will tonify your Lung Qi and redirect Kidney Yang energy to create the vitality that will soar you into the Year of the Dog!

Following that, Hannah will bliss you out with some delicious Yin Yoga to stretch out that sleepy connective tissue which may have been hibernating throughout the chilly months. In TCM, the Spleen is responsible for digesting both food and thoughts- it also loves a good stretch! Hence, Hannah's sequence will aid in bringing clarity of focus whilst also allowing a safe space to let go of stuck emotions.

This fusion of cleansing body and mind will be complemented by the serving of freshly squeezed homemade juices, smoothies and snacks to fuel your revitalised system!

Suitable for all levels.

Urban Yoga Retreat with Projekt 42

Let us help you bring balance to your body, mind and spirit. Make peace with yourself, using Yoga as a journey to self-acceptance, love and forgiveness.

The day starts with Yin Yoga led by Hannah King where we will first focus on yin asanas (poses) to target the deep fascia.

Next, we move on to Power Vinyasa Flow Yoga led by Amy Hughes. Power Vinyasa is a powerful, energetic form of yoga where students fluidly move from one pose to the next while connecting their breathing to their movements.

The class will transition to a 30-minute Pranayama, a formal practice of controlling the breath, which is the source of our prana, or vital life force.

A healthy vegan lunch will be supplied followed by a peaceful zen walk around the grounds.

The afternoon session brings together restorative and relaxing yoga which will help bring a blissful state of relaxation. This restorative yoga helps to increase energy and calm the mind, while the oils assist in emotional healing and releasing stagnant energy.

u r ENOUGH - Workshop at The Restoration Yard 25th Feb

23365060_10155841461383545_1586849305_n.jpg

We live in a time of more freedom; technological advances and greater choices than ever before but have you noticed that when faced with decisions, self-doubt creeps in? Our observations of modern day living shows a pattern of habitual over-analysis; self-mutilating thoughts and a loud inner critic. The consequence of these repetitive mental processes may lead to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction. The result? Either, throwing in the towel and giving up; or a constant strive to improve but how do we measure the latter? How do we know when that intangible goal is reached?

In our yoga sequences and narrative, we will guide you through a process to reconnect you to your inner wisdom; to reacquaint you with your power; to help eliminate whatever is fuelling self-doubt and to ultimately help you to reawaken the truth that is " you are enough".

Hosts: Wild Thing Yoga, Lena Fong Acupuncture

Hannah and Lena are passionate about the internal health benefits of yoga and emphasise that their work is not centred around the gymnastic, visually aesthetic yoga asanas, but rather focuses on the nurturing, energetic and deeper aspects of the yoga poses.

This unique collaboration mutually complements both of their backgrounds. Hannah has a degree in Psychology and has been actively working in mental health since 2013. Lena trained in Chemistry and Chinese Medicine Acupuncture; she has ran a successful acupuncture practice over the past 13 years. Both are no strangers to the effects of anxiety/depression and have experienced, first-hand, the potent healing effects of yoga in this area.

Schedule:
10-12: Forrest Yoga (Lena)
12- 12.30: Break with complimentary vegan baking, teas/infusions and freshly pressed juices
12.30- 1.30: Restorative Yoga & Yoga Nidra (Hannah)

Find time to relax & renew with two hours of yoga and meditation.

Self-care is far from easy. Making time to nurture ourselves can feel like an unnecessary effort, especially during these winter months and around the festive season. But, we can’t poor from an empty jug. We can’t do or be all the things we want to without taking care of ourselves.

When we do something to take care of ourselves, we slow down.

We send ourselves a message of safety and security.

We send ourselves a message that we are worthy and worthy of being taken care of.

November’s Relax and Renew with Hannah will focus on self-care. Taking time out to tend to ourselves. Tend to our mind, body and our breath. Prepare ourselves for the busy month of December.

The practice will be a slow, gentle, Vinyasa flow, connecting our movement to our breath. Followed with some beautiful restorative yoga and ending with a long Savasana.

Join us for two hours of yoga and meditation on Friday 24th November 7.30 - 9.30pm.
